The Williamsport Crosscutters defeated Staten Island 2-1 in a thrilling bottom of the 10th walk off win Thursday night at Bowman Field.
A game that was predicted to be a low scoring pitchers duel turned out as planned.
Cutters RHP Austin Hyatt (2-0, 0.28) made his first start of the 09′ season after being a solid contributor as a closer in the bullpen. Hyatt struck out nine in five shutout innings allowing only two hits and one walk.
Staten Island’s starting pitcher RHP Adam Warren (4-1, 0.96) who came into the game with a 31 consecutive scoreless inning streak allowed seven hits in 4.2 innings pitched while limiting the Cutters to one run on RF Micheal Dabbs solo home run to right in the third inning.
In the top of the 6th Staten Island scored the tying run on a RBI groundout to SS Jeremy Barnes. Baby Bombers 2B Emerson Landoni led off the inning with a walk and after 3B Anthony Hewitt snagged a line drive at third his attempted throw to first base to double off Landoni sailed high and into the Cutters dugout, Landoni was awarded third base on the error. The next batter, RF Zoilo Almonte hit a sharp groundball to Barnes who was playing in on the play; Barnes dove for the ball and threw to first as Landoni scored the tying run.
In the bottom of the 10th with two outs, Micheal Dabbs hit a single up the middle to start Williamsport’s march to victory. LF Zach Collier followed with his own single up the middle moving Dabbs to second.
2B Adam Buschini and Dabbs provided some great game ending action, as Buschini worked a full count and with Dabbs running on the pitch, was able to hit a ball to second in which the Yankees were unable to make a play as Dabbs was able to score the game winning run on a headfirst slide at home just beating the tag at the plate.
Dabbs finished the evening 3 for 4 with a solo home run while also scoring the game-winning run. Dabbs, on a play that would prove important in the close game, also threw out a Yankee at home in the top of the 3rd inning who was trying to score on a bloop hit from third base.
RHP Eric Massingham (2-1, 0.48) was the winning pitcher shutting down the Yanks in the 9th and 10th innings.
The win keeps the Cutters in the lead for the Wild Card and Williamsport remains 3 games behind Mahoning Valley in the Pinckney Division.
