NILES, OHIO–The Yankees were down early but fought hard late, when it counted! Their bats went on a tear in the 5th through the 8th and rallied for 5 runs! Those 5 runs were enough to nail down New York Penn League Championship number 5, how ironic. Closer Ronny Marte pitched in yesterday in the loss so the Yankees sent Graham Stoneburner to the mound to try and get the save. Stoneburner was making his first postseason appearance for Staten Island and made a very good impression as he pitched a scoreless inning on his way to helping the Yankees win the Championship. Yankees starter Jose A. Ramirez was also making his first appearance for the Yankees and did not do so well. He pitched three innings, gave up three hits and two earned runs. Ben Watkins got his first win of the postseason by pitching five scoreless inning while giving up only one hit, walked two and struck out one. Neil Medchill, Kyle Higashioka, Deangelo Mack, Jimmy Paredes, Luke Murton, and Zoilo Almonte were all parts of the offensive assault on the Mahoning Valley Scrappers to attack their pitching and get the five runs that turned out to be enough to win it. No extra innings in this one, the Yankees & Scrappers finished this one in regulation but what a thriller it was!

  1. 5 out of 8 is pretty impressive. I get the feeling many other organizations don’t focus too much on their NYPL Short Season A teams, but I guess the Yankees put a lot of thought into sending good players to Staten Island.

    • We are fortunate in getting good players for our minor league teams. The Yankees have actually won 5 championships out of 11 seasons and 3 in the last five years.

  2. Congratulations to the Staten Island Yankees!!! These are the future New York Yankees!!! It is bright in Yankees land!!!!

    • They are the future of the Yankees and the New York Yankees actually have high hopes for many of the team members from this 2009 Staten Island club and we might see some of these guys in the Bronx some day.
